No dia do filme foi muito bom muitas pessoas vinheram ver o filme eu fiquei com um pouco de vergonha mais foi tudo bem.

Oi! Adorei as fotos nossa foi muito legal apesar de eu ter tido cãembras e distenção muscular mas tudo bem, mas vocês podem manda-las pro meu e-mail (davidhyuuga@gmail.com) que pena que a Teresa não pode ir. Vou levar as aulas de video carta pra vida toda, não gosto de terminar assim tão rápido mas fico feliz que vocês voltem no final do ano e pode contar comigo pro que der e vier!

First Maré, then the beach
As always, time seems to get you by surprise, and we now only have one week left before the video carta comes to an end. But which one! The last couple of weeks have been worth waiting for. First came the opportunity to go outside the walls of Luta Pela Paz and film the kids' daily environment in Maré. A few days after the sun came out and we went to the beach in Ipanema to do a little filming, but most importantly to have a great day together. Both days could get the title of being 'the best summerday', to use a frase that Peter Lucas' students will remember. Simply meaning that they were pretty amazing.
The day we filmed in the streets and shops of Maré gave us some important footage for the video carta. Under Bira's guidance we got to film a little restaurant where a family of one of the kids were working. We shot a shop with birds and fish. And not least we filmed one of the smaller streets of the community, where people and also the postman were interviewed by the kids. It was not easy, but we succeeded in getting around with cameras and doing our shots without stepping on anyone’s toes. This could not have happened without Bira who was making sure that the kids never pointed the cameras towards the main street or other places where traffickers could be catched by the lense. As earlier mentioned Friday can be a hot day in Maré and while filming inside a restaurant a small group of men with big guns took place on the street. This is the first time that I have seen that so early during the day, but the kids didn’t care and even mentioned that we should relax – ’it’s normal’.
The day at Ipanema beach was of course more peaceful and had a handful of the more polished Kodak-moments. Blue sky, kids playing in the water and even a kite that the kids managed to get high high up in the sky. After playtime in the water we went to the big rock that divides Ipanema and Copacabana, Arpoardor. David filmed and the rest of the groups gave a sum-up of the day. It all ended very beautiful with the sun paiting the sky pink when we walked towards the van picking the kids up to go home.
Check out the pictures from both Maré and the beach. A lot of the pictures are taken by the kids, who are all very into not only filming but also photography.

Put your hands in the air!
Fazer uma vídeo carta exige bastante planejamento, por isso sempre chegamos na Maré com um plano A e um plano B. Isso quando não temos uma terceira alternativa também preparada devido às tantas intempéries que já atravessamos. Na última sexta-feira, porém, nenhuma das alternativas preparadas serviu. Enquanto dávamos sequência a uma aula sobre o encerramento da vídeo carta, Bira, fotógrafo do Observatório das Favelas e nosso maior contato em assuntos de segurança dentro da comunidade, se dispôs a sair conosco pela Nova Holanda para que filmássemos tudo que tínhamos programado desde o início do projeto, há quase dois meses.

Driblando adversários
Cada vez correndo mais contra o tempo, chegamos à reta final das filmagens da nossa vídeo-carta. Logicamente os problemas para filmarmos a comunidade persistem, e, consequentemente, continuamos sem uma autorização para ganhar o mercado, as praças e as ruas da Maré com a câmera em punho. É um trabalho complicado e que sabíamos que demandaria tempo. Contudo, restam apenas duas semanas de trabalho e não conseguimos ir além do campo do futebol para filmar as crianças jogando e soltando pipa. O campo de futebol fica ao lado da sede do LPP.
Essa situação nos levou, desde a semana passada, a utilizar uma flip camera no nosso trabalho, e dedicamos uma aula para apresentar essa nova ferramenta para as crianças. O processo de filmagem com a flip camera é muito mais independente do que com a câmera convencional já que o aluno está sozinho com ela. Sendo assim, fizemos os alunos escreverem num papel o que gostariam de filmar e, com base nisso, definimos uma ordem de quem levaria a câmera pra casa. É quase uma missão impossível mantê-los sentados por mais de 7-8 minutos escrevendo sobre algo tão livre, mas deu tudo certo.
Alexandre foi o primeiro a levar a câmera para casa, ele queria filmar a sua tia cozinhando. Ótima ideia e já de primeira a flip câmera serviu para romper a barreira da timidez de um aluno que tem um potencial enorme. Ele sem dúvida está se sentindo mais confortável no projeto após o tempo que passou com a câmera. A filmagem do Alexandre em breve estará aqui no blog também, portanto, um terceiro benefício ao utilizar esse tipo de material e que deixou tanto nós quanto as crianças animados em ver os vídeos online.
A fim de sair da sede do LPP, ontem fomos a um fantástico evento de interação entres as crianças do Afroreggae e do LPP e fizemos imagens do passeio e das crianças lutando boxe, capoeira e maculelê. Além disso, na próxima segunda-feira estamos com um passeio agendado para a praia de Copacabana. Com toda a energia que essas crianças tem, esse passeio tem tudo para ser inesquecível!

How to face it!
It's been over a week, but it still seems like Michael Jackson is on everybody's lips and not least radios and screens. When we walk down the main street in Maré to Luta Pela Paz, it is always accompanied by the sounds of Thriller or some other MJ-tune dancing out the street vendor's small tv's. I tell you this to get the opportunity to share with you a picture of Lucas. Being the youngest in the group he always gets a lot of attention - not least when the kids command 'Michael Jackson', and he puts on the face above.

Encontra no ponto de ônibus em Botafogo, entra na van em direção à Av. Brasil e na altura da passarela 9 o grupo está na Maré. Mais uma vez.
A semana começa na expectativa de que o processo de edição se inicie e que a vídeo-carta comece a ganhar sua própria forma. Para isso planejamos a atividade do dia em torno das cenas que já estavam filmadas e pensando nas que ainda gostaríamos de filmar, fazendo com que os alunos se lembrassem de cada tema filmado até hoje, escrevendo-os no quadro negro, e, em seguida, estimulando-os a organizar superficialmente um roteiro para pautarmos as próximas filmagens e o trabalho de edição.
As crianças decidiram colocar as brincadeiras da festa no final do filme, junto com as demais.
Rahoni e David eram os únicos alunos presentes a essa altura da aula, e ambos tiveram excelentes ideias sobre novos temas a serem filmados. Tendo dividido o filme basicamente em três diferentes partes (apresentação do LPP, esportes e dia-a-dia na comunidade), surgiram ideias para melhorar a apresentação, bem como para encerrar o filme. Por exemplo, ontem mesmo - já na companhia de Henrique, o terceiro aluno presente – eles filmaram/apresentaram todo o prédio do LPP, desde o letreiro até o terraço, inclusive dialogando diretamente com as crianças da vídeo-carta da Amazônia. Já para o encerramento do filme, surgiu a ideia de filmar o pôr-do-sol na Maré, um tipo de abstração que ainda não tinha aparecido entre os alunos já que o filme trabalha diretamente com coisas, pessoas, tarefas e lugares do seu dia-a-dia. O pôr-do-sol pode ajudá-los a dar uma vazão artística nesse trabalho.
Outra contribuição para as próximas filmagens foi a chegada de uma flip camera, a qual os alunos se revezarão em levar para casa após as aulas. A ideia é levar a vídeo-carta a lugares onde não temos fácil acesso, mas apenas os alunos, e aproveitar isso no filme apesar da qualidade inferior do material que surgir dali. Ao mesmo tempo, a flip camera pode ajudar cada um a ganhar intimidade com a câmera e a filmar temas mais intimistas, portanto, torna-se uma boa ferramenta para o projeto como um todo. Veremos os resultados já na próxima quarta-feira se tudo correr bem.
Conforme o planejado – o que já demonstra o nosso jogo de cintura em relação a todos os imprevistos que sempre surgem nesse projeto -, quando faltava uma hora para encerrar as atividades fomos ao Observatório das Favelas acompanhados dos alunos para introduzi-los ao processo de edição. Essa introdução se resumiu a apresentar a sala dos computadores, o programa TVR, o HD portátil, alguns cabos de vídeo – siglas, portanto - etc. Já num clima de descontração assistimos a alguns de nossos vídeos enquanto Henrique tirava fotos de todos no novo ambiente, até que pudemos, enfim, comemorar mais um dia trabalhado na Maré.

Midpoint: Creating Language Together - Criando Linguagem Juntos
We don’t teach any language to anyone. Children become competent in a language. After that we can teach the grammar. But language we experience, we create. So I respected the students very much- Paulo Freire
After a few weeks of internal debate about what to write for this blog, I figured the best way to do it will be to just write, and let my thoughts be free in conjunction to the many others (including our talented new youth journalists) that are already making a great contribution to this stream of consciousness. Finding ourselves at the half of this experience, we have all embarked in the creation of something bigger than ourselves, touching everybody who fights for social transformation from this pocket of the world in the thriving community of Nova Holanda. New School and PUC students, who have hit the ground running with a commitment to give the tools for freedom of expression; Mentors, monitors and volunteers from Luta Pela Paz and Maré in general, who give all of themselves every day to recruit soldiers of peace; Finally and most important, all the teens in the academy, who are making an amazing effort and are the main architectors of the positive legacy of this community project. We are all experiencing and creating language together.
Since my colleagues have dutifully expressed our group feelings of joy as we see the teens progressing in their abilities to use media to express themselves, I would just for now take some time here to briefly caption on a couple experiences that for me have been cornerstones to understanding the process of community care. These come to me as visual images, burned in my psyche as a camera exposes a picture:
Picture #1: Festa Junina. Dozens of kids walking in and out of colorful festivities. Caipira music invading every corner. Dancing. Food and drinks untouched until permission given for all. Kids playing fishing, kids playing bowling, kids playing kissing. Kids playing.
Picture #2: Bira visiting the academy after an amazing day of production in the field. A meeting of minds and hearts. One of the most beautiful afternoons ever recorded in my head.
Nós não ensinamos nenhuma língua para ninguém. Crianças se tornam competentes em uma língua. Depois que nós podemos ensinar à gramática. Mas as línguas nos experimentam, nós criamos. Então, eu respeito muito os alunos - Paulo Freire
Após algumas semanas de intenso debate interno sobre o que escrever para este blog, achei a melhor maneira de fazê-lo será apenas para escrever, e deixar o meu pensamento livre, em conjugação com muitos outros (incluindo os nossos jovens talentosos novos jornalistas) que estão já dando um grande contribuo para este fluxo de consciência. Encontrando-nos na metade desta experiência, todos nós já embarcamos para a criação de algo maior do que nós, tocando todos os que lutam pela transformação social a partir desta parte do mundo na próspera comunidade de Nova Holanda. Estudantes da PUC e New School , que têm trabalhado com um compromisso de dar os instrumentos para a liberdade de expressão; Mentores, monitores e voluntários de Luta Pela Paz e toda Maré, em geral, que dão tudo de si mesmo todos os dias para recrutar soldados da paz; Por último e mais importante, todos os adolescentes na academia, que estão fazendo um esforço incrível e são o principal arquitetos do legado positivo deste projeto na comunidade. Estamos todos experimentando e criando linguagem juntos.
Desde os meus colegas têm devidamente expressado nossos sentimentos de alegria quando vemos os jovens progredindo nas suas capacidades para utilizar meios de comunicação para expressar-se, queria apenas para agora levar algum tempo para aqui brevemente dar uma legenda das experiências que, para mim tem sido a pedra angular compreensão do processo de cuidado comunitário. Estas vêm a mim como imagens visuais, queimado na minha psique como uma câmera expõe uma imagem:

One of many great moments between Bira and the children. This scene is shot after a long day of filming within Complexo do Mare and Bira is teaching the children about how many states there are in Brazil before a guy with a van and soda shows up.
Bira is our access guy, he tells us where we can film and where we can't. Most of the times it's can't because he wants us to be 100% safe and because there are a lot of underlying problems in the favela. Bira has a history in Mare, which I am not going to discuss further in this blog, but everyone knows him and trusts him. He runs a photography project at Observatorio das Favelas and he is the guy to know if you want to do anything in Nova Holanda.

This also made it up for the fact that we didn't get outside to film today. Knowing that this could be a possibility we made both a plan A and a plan B from home. Plan A was to bring the cameras and the kids outside and film while presenting the animals in Maré. Pigs, chickens and dogs just to name a few. But, as mentioned earlier on this blog, it is complicated to film outside the walls of Luta Pela Paz. We therefore always get guidance from Bira, a photographer from Maré, who teaches photography at another organisation in Maré called Observatório de Favelas. Bira is also an important figur in the work at Luta Pela Paz. What ever is worth knowing about situations such as moving around in Maré with a camera, he knows. This Wednesday, after Bira's advice, we ended up with plan B, which was to teach a workshop of creative filming and to introduce the blog to the children. It actually turned out to be a first class experience, since eight new blog posts came out of it.
The fact that the kids only need to take a few looks at the blog before jumping into writing and publishing posts on it, is very characteristic for their relationships to the whole so-called 'Information Age'. At Luta Pela Paz the kids have access to computers with internet connection and they are also being teached a class called 'Informatica', where they spend a great amount of time in front of a computer. And then there are of course the social networks online that some of the children are familiar with, such as Orkut, the Brazilian version of the infamous Facebook community. Not to mention the computer games of course, which almost all of the kids sneak to practice, when ever they get the chance.
After doing the blog workshop and after all having posted on the blog, we turned to our creative workshop. Logistics are always a challenge, and our original plan for the creative filming was that the children should have brought their favorite thing from home and film it in various creative ways. However, this part of the plan was falling through, so we instead asked the children to choose a favorite thing, a person or an activity at Luta Pela Paz. After writing about why they made this choice and what it meant to them, they all did their own invidual filming. Lucas did a really great shot of a boxer's dancing feet in the gym. Michel filmed three different capoeira instruments in the courtyard outside the gym, while he explained the names and the use of them. And Rayanne got some good close-ups of Caro, her favorite educator at Luta Pela Paz.
Further down you can see how the schedule of the day looked like. The plan mentions giving the kids a flip camera, but we never got to do that since we still don't know if there are any flips available for our group. The flip is a very simple little video camera, not bigger than a small digital camera. The idea is to give each of the children a few days with it, so they can film in their homes, where we might not have access with the big and not very incognito video cameras. This will also give the more shy children a chance to play around with a camera on their own.
Hopefully we will be able to let the first of the kids bring the flip home sometime during next week. I am sure something really great will come out of it - since it will bring another dimension, the home environment, into the children's video letter.

Wednesday, the 2nd of July
2.00 - 2.15: Ice breaker. MCJoel is doing a freeeeestyle.
2.15 – 2.45: Basic film production:
-B-role (Alejandro). Why is it necessary and what do we use it for. Show examples from the Amazone film. E.g. the girls walking from one hut to another.
- Cover pictures (Nadia). What are they and what do we use them for.
2.45-3.00pm: If we have the flip camera, we should introduce it and the one bringing it home should get a chance to try it.
3.00 – 5.00 pm
Plan A: We can go out an film.
3.00 – 3.15pm: talk about what we are filming today and divide into groups (Chris). 3.15-5.00pm: Shooting outside. It depends on Bira what we can do and if we can split the kids into two groups.
Possible themes:
- Animals
- Where do the kids buy food, toys, clothes etc.
Plan B: We can't get outside to film
3.00 – 5.00: Workshop on creative shots. Joel will do a 15 minutes introduction on how to make creative shots.
After this we will give them ten minutes to write about their favorite thing. Hopefully they have all brought one for class and if not, they should find a thing at LPP.
Key things to write about: Why did they choose this thing and what does it mean to them. It can also be a person or themselves.
After the writing they will go to the gym, film their favorite thing from an angle they choose and talk about it while filming. The shot should be no longer than 30 seconds.
This workshop should be incorporated another day, if we are going for plan A.
4.45 – 5.00: Blog workshop. What is a blog and what can a blog be used for. Show them Luta Pela Paz’s blog and teach them how to post something on it. Fabio – do you want to do this?
Note: at the end of the day we are bringing home both cameras to go through the material so we will have an overview Friday, when the editing starts. One camera goes to Nadia in Ipanema and the other goes to the boys in Botafogo.

Friday/Saturday Luta Pela Paz
You really never know what to expect when you arrive at Passarela Nove and Avenida Brazil. The streets are hot on Friday's in Mare. Fridays are when Favelas usually have Baile Funk parties where a lot drug dealing take place. Everyone knows this; especially the police and you always see them patrolling the streets. We came with the hopes of continuing our filming outside Luta Pela Paz and within the Complexo de Mare. However, we got word early that things weren't too safe so we couldn't film outside of the walls of Luta Pela Paz. We made the best of our situation and the kids did a great job filming the staff of Luta Pela Paz as well as boxing classes.
It's funny, while we clearly hear gunshots from M-3's and AK-47s 3 blocks away; the kids are only focused on the lesson plan we've prepared for them. They are extremely focused while violence is going on so close to home. It's also really pleasing because it means that they see what we are teaching them as much more interesting than what’s going on outside.
Saturday, I had an interview with Luke Downey founder of Luta Pela Paz. During the interview Luke talked about how the filming of the video card is not only having an effect on the kids, but the staff as well. They did a great job filming the staff at Luta Pela Paz. They went around and had each member introduce themselves and their position. It was pretty awesome. They held it like an interview and asked the staff members why they are doing what they are doing. They are really taking control of this project. Luke explained after the kids filmed that scene how many of the staff members were in tears. They’re so proud of them and know this is a rare opportunity for them. It was great to hear that coming from the founder of Luta Pela Paz.
So while the day in Mare started off on a violent note, what went on in Luta Pela Paz had a greater impact on everyone’s day.

No Rio, Maré.
Sexta-feira, 26 de junho, chegamos para mais um dia de filmagens na Favela da Maré. Apesar do nosso atraso, um bom número de estudantes nos esperava para o início da aula, que estava programada para falarmos um pouco sobre edição, analisarmos melhor a vídeocarta sobre os índios da Amazônia e, enfim, sairmos pela Nova Holanda para filmar aquilo que fosse importante para os estudantes. Apesar do tempo nublado, não chovia no Complexo da Maré.
As crianças não tinham dificuldade de compreender como funcionava o processo de edição quando começamos a ouvir alguns tiros serem disparados na rua, sinal de que mais uma vez teríamos que mudar os planos da aula por falta de segurança na comunidade. Nosso grupo estava dividido, Teresa e Simone estavam no Observatório das Favelas arranjando um computador com configuração para suportar os programas de edição e agora não podiam caminhar até a sede do Luta pela Paz, que fica do lado oposto da comunidade.
De alguma forma tiroteios como o dessa sexta-feira já não alteram o emocional de ninguém ali. As crianças já estão acostumadas. Nós talvez precisemos de mais algumas semanas para ouvir passivamente os ruídos de uma AK-47. Como se não bastasse termos que nos preocupar com luz, chuva etc. temos que acompanhar o ritmo da favela. Com resignação seguimos nossos planos, aprendendo cada vez melhor a improvisar.
Ficou decidido que faríamos imagens internas, gravando Lucke, o fundador do projeto, e o treino de boxe que aconteceria na academia com alguns dos nossos alunos, inclusive. Sempre deixamos os estudantes livres para manusear as câmeras, porém, é necessário estarmos atentos à luz, ao foco e ao som para que as imagens possam ser aproveitadas com alguma qualidade no momento da edição. Nos surpreendemos, contudo, quando, ao entregarmos as câmeras para as crianças na academia de boxe, elas terem iniciado todo o processo de preparação de um take por conta própria. Como costumamos brincar: foi sucesso!
As crianças quando trabalham com pequenos grupos onde cada um tem uma função específica para a filmagem se organizam magnificamente. Trabalharam o texto, testaram o som, se preocuparam com o foco (apesar de não terem regulado-o) e ficaram atentos para não filmar espelhos ou as muitas pessoas que deveriam ficar por de trás da cena. Ficaram cerca de uma hora a sós com a câmera, sem qualquer interrupção. Comemoramos muito.
Em um dia em que a van que nos leva para a Maré não passava, que a TV para revermos nossos vídeos não funcionou, que tivemos uma briga entre alunos em sala de aula e no dia em que os tiros lá fora não paravam, obtivemos também a melhor resposta dos estudantes ao trabalho que vem sendo desenvolvido, nós com eles e eles conosco. Assim vamos aprendendo a lidar com a Maré. Vezes alta, vezes baixa, a Maré se impõe ali com a naturalidade que seu nome carrega, com a regularidade que só quem vive ali soube conhecer e se adaptar.

Friday June 26th
Fridays are always pretty interesting in Complexo do Mare. We came in a little bit late, but luckily the children have a lot of things to play with at Luta Pela Paz. We found them all in the gym and they were ready for a new class. This was our schedule for Friday.

The first theoretical parts went well. We had a great editing workshop and we discussed editing while watching parts of the video letter from the Amazon again. After the class we were supposed to have a brief talk with Bira, who is our security guy in the favela, about different possible locations for shooting outdoor scenes. We never got so far because of pretty heavy machine gun funk from outside the organization. There was a slight panic spreading through us, the professors, whereas the children did not seem to pay any attention to it at all. The children are used to the rapid and loud clacking sounds from AK-47's, maybe we will get used to it too after a few more weeks. Today was the second Friday in a row where we have had to "hide" for about half an hour because of shootings outside. However, we changed our schedule and started doing presentations of the administration and the various professors instead. This went very well, and it was great seeing the kids filming themselves, checking sound and white balance (without really adjusting the white balance, we reckoned the kids just thought it was a cool thing to stand in front of the camera pretending to do some serious video production stuff, holding up a white sheet of paper..) and moving around presenting their professors totally on their own,. This is exactly what we have been working towards, having the children film and present their surroundings on their own, establishing a natural component to the video letter.
We also sorted out where we can edit the film and what software to use. We were lucky to be able to use the computers at Observatorio das Favelas, another NGO in Mare not far from Luta Pela Paz. We will start rendering what we have of footage Wednesday and start editing on Friday with the children.

Today we wanted to follow up on the lesson we taught on Monday by reviewing the footage they took. We discussed with the class in their eyes what worked and what didn’t worked based on the lessons from Monday and Wednesdays. What helped the a lot were the amazing work sheets Nadia worked on. She drew pictures framing the basic ideas of filming (sun light, sounds, camera angles etc). The graphics and directions in Portuguese was a success. The kids really took to it and were able to make adjustments based on it. This was very important, because for the first time we were going to have access to the outside. The situation in Mare at times can be tense. We aren’t able to just film anything, since we do have restrictions. Usually, when there are restrictions (thinking in terms of the US) people don’t respect them. However, in Mare we go through Bira who is a community leader. He tells us what we can film and where we can do it. So, were able to film the kids of Luta Pela Paz and mare flying kites and playing futebol. While some of our crew took turns filming the day’s events, the end product will be mainly from the kids’ viewpoint.
What was so amazing about filming on the soccer field is that we got children from outside of Luta Pela Paz involved. They all surrounded themselves around Bira who keeps them honest. We probably should have been filming this sequence, but it’s one of those moments that are better left for those who actually experience it.

Monday June 22th
On Monday we had a meeting at 10am to basically discuss how things are going. There was some genuine concern based on last week’s events. Things were chaotic, unorganized and some of us probably felt disconnected from the process. However, we have regrouped and this week so far has been good. We decided to have a two-hour meeting before each class to schedule the day and do delegate responsibility. This was the schedule we came up with for Monday 6/22/09:

We followed the schedule and it turned out to be a great class.
Monday we taught the kids the basic ethics of filming. We basically informed the kids that with this project, they are ambassadors of Complexo de Mare. They are representing their community and need to get the best out of a video letter. Alejandro and Nadia showed the students a prime example on how it should be. What we reinforced is how the camera should be treated as a friend or a child who knows NOTHING about life at Luta Pela Paz. Everyone seemed to be excited and nervous about the opportunity to be ambassadors of their community.
However, we had to let them know that to properly do this they needed to learn the proper ethics of using a camera. Nadia led this discussion with translating help from Teresa one of the students from PUC. The basic rudiments that were followed were:

• Rule of thirds
• Don’t film towards the sun
• How to set a scene
The end result was a positive one. It’s the first time we got the kids filming activities at the Luta Pela Paz outside of the Festa Junina. One of the kids David is aspiring to be a journalist and shoot documentary films. He is very much into the project. So much so, that he admitted how nervous he was and we all saw he was visibly shaking. However, once we started rolling he was a natural. Another Natural on the camera is Rayanne. She loves the spot light and excels well in it. We also had some other students film one of their boxing classes. While excited, it proved to be more difficult because of the loud speakers in the gym.
